Answering your questions about our next production
Is Muffed the title of the play?
No, it's just the shortened version of the title. The full title of the play is:
The Meaningful Action Theatre Company Presents A Workshop Reading Of "Muffed: A Recounting Of Farmington, Maine's 43rd Annual Chester Greenwood Day Devised By The Members Of The Meaningful Action Theatre Company" which means, you'll see us using both - it will all depend on how much space we have to work with.
What does it mean for a play to be devised?
Devised works are created collectively by the theatre artists performing the play. And a documentary-style devised piece, like ours, is based on interviews with people over a specific period of time.
Is The Meaningful Action Theatre Company a real theatre company?
The Meaningful Action Theatre Company is the company of eight actors in the play - not a separate theatre group.
BUT, they are real to us!
How many characters are there in the play?
To answer this question, think about a Matryoshka doll. If I ask you how many dolls there are, would you count just the doll you see on the outside or all the smaller dolls inside too?
Each of the eight actors working on this project is playing a company member of the Meaningful Action Theatre Company.
During the play, each Company Member portrays people from Farmington, Maine, as they tell the story of observing the preparations for Chester Greenwood Day. The population of Farmington, Maine, is 7,597 people. However, only .2633% were interviewed for the play.
So, while you will only see eight humans on stage, they will cover 28 roles throughout the play. This includes one actor who plays multiple characters in the same scene! We told you this play would make you laugh.
What's the setting of the play?
The Meaningful Action Theatre Company is lucky to have found a local bookstore that has enough space in its storage room for the reading. When you enter Prologue's space for the performance, it will feel like you are stepping into a bookstore - it will in fact bear a striking resemblance to One More Page Books.
Unfortunately, neither of us has the resources to move their whole store here for the run of the show.
But what's a bookstore without books? We are incorporating a BIG LITTLE FREE LIBRARY into the experience of this show.
Like any neighborhood Little Free Library, we will seed the bookshelves with a few selections to get things started, and everyone attending the play is invited to bring books to add to the shelves.
While you are here before or after a performance, we hope you will browse the shelves and leave with something new to read.
At the end of the production, any books left on the shelves will be donated.
If you are ready to make some space on your own bookshelves before the play opens on the 24th, let us know, and we'd be happy to take them off your hands a little early.
