This year, our new works series FOREWORD is tackling a different type of workshop – the development of an adaptation from the ground up. Five theatre artists will be joining the playwrights, starting on Feb 19, for five days of developmental work on an adaptation of the book Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner.
Prologue’s Artistic Director, Jason Tamborini, and Patrick W. Lord, Helen Hayes award-winning Projection & Video Designer, have been eyeing this project for a while and we are excited that schedules have aligned for this project to move forward. We will be sharing a conversation between Jason and Patrick, along with some behind-the-scenes footage, after the workshop concludes.

“Emil and the Detectives is a story that has all the elements of what makes not just great TYA [Theatre for Young Audiences] - but great theatre. This story of a boy finding friends and discovering a new world, all in the pursuit of justice is such a grounded and real journey, but the characters infuse it with charm and wonder. Adapting this for the stage is a joyful process because Kästner’s story really takes on new life when looked at with a theatrical lens of whimsy and playfulness. It may be a story that is now almost a hundred years old, but the curiosity of children and their love of adventure is truly timeless.” |
